Chieko Shiraishi｜ SHIMAKAGE II

Chieko Shiraishi is a photographer whose work focuses on the primal landscapes of everyday memories. Her signature work, “SHIMAKAGE (Island Shadow),” is a series of monochrome prints featuring island and seaside landscapes from around Japan. This latest portfolio marks the second installment, following the highly acclaimed 2023 edition. Created using a technique that manually adjusts the tonal balance directly on photographic paper, the works have a fairly dark tone, making it difficult to distinguish between day and night, the present or a generation ago. The images stand as faint silhouettes against a hazy background.

Chieko Shiraishi
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, she began her career as a photographer in the late 1990s. She has held solo exhibitions at Gallery Kaido and Gallery Tosei in Tokyo, and more recently at Galerie Echo 119 in Paris. She is a photographer whose future promises are endless, both in Japan and abroad. She won the Jury Prize at the 2023 Benrido Hariban Award. His photo books include “Cactus and Tail” (Toseisha), “Island Shadow” (Sokkyusha), and “Deer Crossing” (Sokkyusha), and a mini-portfolio by Benrido .
