Awoiska van der Molen (b.1972) is known for her monochrome images made in nature. Spending long periods of time in solitude in remote landscapes, she slowly uncovers the identity of the place, allowing it to impress upon her its specific emotional and physical qualities. For this collaboration with Benrido, Awoiska has selected three images that were made as part of ongoing body of work during different travels from the southern t the northern regions of Japan in 2015 and 2017.
“Her own silver gelatin print-making is of an exceptionally high quality. But it is also true to say that her exquisite images of nature especially, through her close attention to the play of light and shadow have much in common with some of the historic master prices produced as collotypes at Benrido. As such her work, with its subtle gradation and tone and sensitivity to the details of natural forms, is perfectly suited to the potential offered through the collotype process.”
