An integral part of the Benrido’s mission is to support the continuation of the collotype tradition by working with contemporary photographers. The Hariban Award is an annual photography competition that encourages entering artists to reimagine their work through the collotype process.
The 2021 competition was won by Tarrah Krajnak. Four special Juror’s award winners; Donavon Smallwood selected by Pauline Vermare, Andrea Orejarena & Caleb Stein selected by Yasufumi Nakamori, Dustin Thierry selected by Oluremi C. Onabanjo, and Feiyi Wen selected by Yanyou Yuan Di, along with the Benrido Award winner Shahria Sharmin were joined by six photographers (Ichiko Ageno, Matan Ashkenazy, Dylan Hausthor, Gideon Mendel, Ed Panar, Aaron Schuman and Dominic Turner) receiving honourable mentions.
All of these artists have their work included in this limited edition, hand-printed collotype book. The jury was comprised of Yanyou Yuan Di (Founder Jiazazhi Press/Library), Yasufumi Nakamori (Senior curator of International art photography, Tate Modern), Oluremi C. Onabanjo (Curator & Scholar of Photography of Africa, Associate Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and Pauline Vermare (Independent curator and photography historian, formerly cultural director at Magnum Photos and curator at ICP, New York).
The culmination of meticulous development and production, the catalogue offers a visual and tactile experience that combines traditional technique with contemporary projects. The catalogue comes in a limited edition of 150 copies, hand printed on Japanese Gampi & Mitsumata washi.
