An integral part of the Benrido Atelier’s mission is to support the continuation of the collotype tradition by working with contemporary photographers. The Hariban Award is an annual photography competition that encourages entering artists to reimagine their work through the collotype process.
The 2023 competition was won by Kristine Potter. Four special Juror’s award winners; Edgar Martins selected by Nestan Nijeradze, Chieko Shiraishi selected by Sarah Greene, Agnieszka Sosnowska selected by Rei Masuda, and Sam Laughlin selected by Awoiska van der Molen, along with the Benrido Award winner Sayuri Ichida were joined by 12 photographers (Andrea Graziosi, Sigrid Thorbjoernsen, Guillaume Holzer, Alfonso de Gregorio, Abigail Hadeed, Swen Bernitz, Carla Kogelman, Giorgi Shengelia, Martin Amis, Vanessa Winship, Jean-François Spricigo, Christopher Littlewood) receiving honourable mentions. All of these artists have their work included in this limited edition, hand-printed collotype book.
The jury was comprised of Nestan Nijaradze (Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Tbilisi Photo Festival and Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum), Sarah Greene (Founder and Director of Blue Lotus Gallery & Editions, Hong Kong), Rei Masuda (Curator of Photography at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), Awoiska van der Molen (Artist)
The culmination of meticulous development and production, the catalogue offers a visual and tactile experience that combines traditional technique with contemporary projects. The catalogue comes in a limited edition of 150 copies, hand printed on Japanese Gampi & Mitsumata washi.
