An integral part of the Benrido Atelier’s mission is to support the continuation of the collotype tradition by working with contemporary photographers. The Hariban Award is an annual photography competition that encourages entering artists to reimagine their work through the collotype process.
The 2020 competition was won by Maude Arsenault. Four special Juror’s award winners Marianne Bjørnmyr selected by Felix Hoffmann, Paula Damasceno selected by Lucy Gallun, Raymond Meeks selected by Emma Bowkett and Dan Winters selected by Ma Quan, along with the Benrido Award winner Liz Johnson Artur were joined by six photographers (Dana Ariel, Emanuel Cederqvist, Ron Jude, Kovi Konowiecki, Jin Li, Ronit Porat, Eugenie Shinkle and Dustin Thierry) receiving honourable mentions.
All of these artists have their work included in this limited edition, hand-printed collotype book. The jury was comprised of Emma Bowkett (Director of Photography of FT Weekend Magazine), Lucy Gallun (Associate Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York), Felix Hoffmann (Art Historian and Art Theorist, Head Curator of the C/O Berlin Foundation) and Ma Quan (Professor of Academy of Arts & Design-Tsinghua University, Designer & Artist).
The culmination of meticulous development and production, the catalogue offers a stunning visual and tactile experience that combines traditional technique with contemporary projects. The catalogue comes in a limited edition of 150 copies, hand printed on Japanese Gampi & Mitsumata washi paper. The master printers at Benrido worked carefully to realise a cohesive catalogue sure to be an integral part of any owners collection.
