An integral part of the Benrido Atelier’s mission is to support the continuation of the collotype tradition by working with contemporary photographers. The Hariban Award is an annual photography competition that encourages entering artists to reimagine their work through the collotype process.
The 2022 competition was won by Yasutaka Kojima. Four special Juror’s award winners; Luvuyo Equiano Nyawose selected by Sayaka Takahashi, Dienie Brouwer selected by Micheal Mack, John Divola selected by Sandra Phillips, and Ross McDonnell selected by Lekgetho Makola, along with the Benrido Award winner Yana Kononova were joined by eight photographers (Marcus DeSieno, Monika Orpik, Alfonso de Gregorio, Gert Motmans, Felipe Russo, Isabel Miquel Arques, Eva Gjaltema, Hady Barry) receiving honourable mentions. All of these artists have their work included in this limited edition, hand-printed collotype book.
The jury was comprised of Sayaka Takahashi (Director of PGI / Photo Gallery International), Michael Mack (Publisher MACK, award-winning books on art, photography and critical studies), Sandra S. Philips (Curator Emerita or Photography, San Franciscco Museum of Modern Art), and Lekgetho Makola (CEO of The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, South Africa).
The culmination of meticulous development and production, the catalogue offers a visual and tactile experience that combines traditional technique with contemporary projects. The catalogue comes in a limited edition of 150 copies, hand printed on Japanese Gampi & Mitsumata washi.
