An integral part of the Benrido Atelier’s mission is to support the continuation of the collotype tradition by working with contemporary photographers. The HARIBAN AWARD is an annual photography competition that encourages entering artists to reimagine their work through the collotype process.
The 2024 competition was won by Maja Daniels. Four special Juror’s award winners; Dylan T Hausthor selected by Clint Woodside, Janna Ireland selected by Jessica Baxter, Laura Koskinen-Bennett selected by Tomoka Aya, and Birthe Piontek selected by Makus Shcaden, along with the Benrido Award winner Anika Spereiter were joined by 9 photographers; Tim Carpenter, Mario Lalau, Jack Latham, Thomas Nease, Alexandre Silberman, Caleb Stein, Chanell Stone, Ed Sykes and Rodrigo Valenzuela receiving honourable mentions. All of these artists have their work included in this limited edition, hand-printed collotype book.
The jury was comprised of Tomoka Aya (The Third Gallery Aya, gallery owner and director), Markus Schaden (Founder of schaden.com, a bookshop and publisher specialising in photography books, Co-director of the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne), Jess Baxter (Assistant Curator, International Art at Tate Modern, researcher and writer), Clint Woodside (Photographer, curator and founder of Deadbeat Club)
The culmination of meticulous development and production, the catalogue offers a visual and tactile experience that combines traditional technique with contemporary projects. The catalogue comes in a limited edition of 150 copies, hand printed on Japanese Gampi & Mitsumata washi.
